What You Don’t Know About The History of Solar

I’ve got a confession…

Until a few months ago, I knew nothing about solar energy. That’s right, not a thing.

At first, I sifted through teetering stacks of articles and tried to make sense of figures and statistics that may as well have been a foreign language. Translating the world of solar felt like unknotting a pair of shoelaces. A bewildering jumble of misinformation.

I was driven by the concept of solar energy. A free, renewable energy source that made sense. Not just for us, but for the planet. It seemed like a no-brainer. Easy as ABC. So why weren’t more people making the switch? Renewable energy isn’t a new concept. We can link solar all the way back to the 7th century B.C when lighting fires took a slither of sunlight and a piece of glass. A little later, in the 3rd century B.C, the Romans and Greeks used the reflection of a mirror to light torches for religious ceremonies. Then, in 1839, during the Industrial Revolution, French physicist Alexandre Edmond proved the photovoltaic effect. A solar cell converts sunlight into electricity. Solar power.

And yet, we’ve taken our time to warm up to the concept. Habitual complacency prevents change. There’s been no reason to. Dependent, consistent fossil fuels have powered our homes without issue. Houses, heated. Lit up like Christmas trees. Only now, centuries later, are we beginning to realise…maybe there’s another way. It’s time to make a change. To understand the immense benefits of a solar-powered future.

But where to start with solar?

It’s the question I asked myself two months ago. At first, I was lost. But as days passed, words came freely, fingers tapping on keys like old friends. The truth is this has been a learning curve. But that was the point. For most of us, the journey towards solar energy is a new one. There’s so much to consider—so much information to wade through. Trust me, I know. That was me.

What if we could make understanding solar easier?

What if we could do the bulk of the work for you? What if the answers to all your questions could be in one, simple, accessible place? Imagine the time you’d save.

Vision 2030 has decided to open up the floor to you. I want to know what you’d like me to write about. What blog posts would you like to see? What burning questions are you struggling to find the answers to? Is there anything holding you back from investing in a solar-powered future?

Have you ever asked Google…

Do I need planning permission for solar panels

What is a DNO?

Is a DNO the same as my energy provider?

Do solar panels and battery storage add value to my property?

What do I need to do to qualify for the “off-peak” energy tariff?

Send your questions via our contact us page.

Together, we’ll be able to bridge the gap, bringing solar to households across the country.
