How many hours of sunshine are there in Birmingham?

Birmingham is an excellent location for solar panel installations as it receives a steady stream of sunshine throughout the year. It also benefits from an “urban heat island” effect which keeps temperatures above average. Birmingham’s sunniest period is from May to August when it receives 160+ hours per month. June is the sunniest with 188 hours. On average, the UK’s “second city” gets to bask in 1,400 hours of sun every year.

Are there any local facilities already benefitting from solar in Birmingham?

Solar panel installations enable local communities in the West Midlands to cut soaring energy costs and keep the lights on. A desire to reduce emissions is also driving adoption. Birmingham Airport (BHX) is currently mid-way through a solar project that will eventually power 20% of all of its operations. BHX is planning to install a colossal 6.8-megawatt array featuring more than 12,000 solar panels by May 2024. The installation is key to the airport’s “net-zero” ambitions, which it aims to achieve by 2033.

BHX’s chief finance officer, Simon Richards said: “With the impacts of climate change all too real, steps like this represent us doing our bit to help protect our planet’s future for generations to come.”
